Pink Camo Cake with Buttercream Frosting

Some say that baking is more difficult than cooking, but I beg to differ. For some reason I can’t compose a recipe just by thinking that certain ingredients will taste good together. With baking, however, you basically use the same main ingredients all the time and spruce it up with different fruits, chocolates and other treats. And when in doubt, you can always douse it with frosting and at least make it look appetizing. Here is my latest baking concoction for a friend’s birthday this weekend.

Ingredients

  • Box of white cake mix with ingredients labeled on box (usually eggs and vegetable oil) Or you can put in the extra work and make it from scratch! I did not.
  • Food coloring
  • Powdered sugar (aka. confectioners sugar or icing sugar)
  • Milk (I used soy milk but I think any will do)
  • Vanilla extract
  • Butter
  • 2 cake pans

Instructions

Cake

  • Preheat oven to what is indicated on your box or other instructions
  • Make cake batter following instructions on the box
  • Separate batter equally into three bowls
  • Add different food coloring to each bowl or varying amounts of one color to each bowl (I recommend starting out with your lightest color and proceeding from there)
  • Put different colored batters into 3 ziploc bags (one for each color)
  • Cut a tip off of one of the bottom corners of each bag
  • Grease cake pans
  • Go in between each color releasing about 2 Tablespoons worth of batter in each spot creating a random pattern in the pan (pattern will transform in the oven)
  • Tab the pan on the counter lightly to level out the batter
  • Place pans in oven for amount of time indicated on your cake mix box or other instructions

Icing

  • I followed these instructions. But doubled it 🙂
  • I frosted the bottom half and put the top half on and frosted that
  • I then added a drop of food coloring to the rest of the frosting to add the border and flowers (I used a frosting bag and tips from a set I’d previously bought. Look here for similar ones)
