April Favorites

I liked April. And not just because the weather in Boston finally warmed up. I visited one of my best friends from college in NYC for her birthday, got in plenty of beautiful sunset esplanade runs in, went out with old coworkers, and found a new apartment to live in with one of my close friends next year!

Here are some of the things I found great enjoyment from using, wearing, listening, watching and playing this month:

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer – I picked this up in NYC and I’m pretty sure have worn it every day since my return. Not only does it cover up the redness on the dry parts of my cheeks, it actually makes my skin look and feel healthier with every wear (I guess that’s the moisturizer part). For someone who is a little scared to take the foundation plunge, I would highly recommend this product.

Essie Back in the Limo – This is the color I chose for my fingernails and tootsies for my mani-pedi in NYC. I honestly did not think it was going to be as shear as it was but I really didn’t care in the end because the color was so pretty. It’s an ever so slightly peachy toned light pink that very natural and delicate but still noticeable.

Trivia Crack – I have yet to beat someone in this game but that’s not stopping me from playing this game on my phone whenever possible. You challenge friends to a game and the first person to win 5 categories of trivia wins. Pretty self-explanatory and simple but oh-so addicting.

Grey’s Anatomy – I’ve been a Grey’s fan since its conception way back in 2005 and last year I admit, I kind of fell off the band wagon. This changed when I started seeing commercials for the show in the form of clips from season 1 and I started feeling super nostalgic and I cracked. Hello Netflix

Maybelline Define-A-Brow –  Lately I’ve been lazy with my brows and haven’t had the patience to fill them in with a brush and shadow. It’s times like these when this brow pencil comes in handy. While I’ve not tried the Anastasia Brow Wiz, I think this pencil does the trick. Plus I use the comb in the brush to separate my eye lashes when they’re being fussy so double purpose!

Little Mix – I discovered this band in the midst of the “OMG ZAYNE’S LEAVING 1D” episode as Zayne is engaged to Perrie Edwards of Little Mix. I thought I would check them out because there had to be some reason they were the number one girl band in the UK and had pretty much become the new Spice Girls. And let me tell you they rock. They don’t overly sexualize themselves the way that I think other girl bands nowadays tend to do and their music is super catchy! If you haven’t heard them before, check out their song Move. You won’t be disappointed.

Everyday Wardrobe Staples Save & Spend

I feel like I’m always posting about things that I’d like to have in my wardrobe, my makeup collection, my apartment, etc. And when I mention “essentials” in a post, what I really mean is that in a perfect world, I would have all of these items in my closet. Given that I’m only 23, however, and have only been working for about 2 years, I obviously do not have the most financial freedom in the world and therefore cannot afford everything on my wishlist. For those of you who also feel the strain of a limited budget, I thought about and compiled a list of the pieces in my collection that I already own and cannot live without. I realize that I did not include some obvious situational essentials (swim suit, suit for interviews, winter boots..) but this post would’ve gone on for pages if I included everything. These are simply my everyday (or more common) staples.

I truly believe that these pieces are ones that every girl should own or invest in if they do not already have them. Here are some cheaper and more pricey options for my picks:

Neutral Cardigan – While I tend to go for neutrals with just about everything I buy, I think it’s important to have at least one neutral cardigan. If you own at least one bright colored or patterned shirt or dress, during the number of times you wear it you are more likely than not going to require a little extra coverage and warmth and that’s when a neutral toned cardigan comes in to save the day. Black & Nude Pumps – These are separate, and you need both. Black for interviews and pretty much any occasion where you have a dark colored or patterned dress and nudes for whenever you’re wearing a little colored dress or an all over light ensemble where wearing black shoes would distract from your clothing. LBD (Little Black Dress) – Similar to how dark jeans are more flattering on all body types, so are dark dresses. Black goes with everything and if you’re someone who wears dresses (I actually am not a huge dress person) there will be multiple opportunities and occasions for you to break this one out of your closet. Blazer – Blazers have the power to instantly transform a casual ensemble into a sophisticated one. They look good with pretty much every outfit I can think of and are appropriate for virtually any occasion. SAVE // SPEND

Silver / Gold Studs – Yes I know this is the only jewelry piece I included in this post but honestly, everyone’s style is so different when it comes to jewelry that simple silver and/or gold studs seemed like the only piece that go with all different styles of jewelry. SAVE // SPEND

Loose White Button Down – I’m going to stress loose because a tight, fitted button down portrays a very different, work-esque look. Loose button downs can be office appropriate and casual and because of their fit, look good on every body shape. SAVE // SPEND

Sneakers – It doesn’t matter if you have never worked out a day in your life, you are going to get yourself into situations when your feet will require the support and structure of a sneaker. And no, I’m not talking about the heeled or platform style (can’t say I’ve jumped on either of these bandwagons), I’m talking about the good old, no fuss sneaker. SAVE // SPEND

Dark Wash Jeans – It does not matter which cut you purchase (I prefer skinny jeans myself) but dark wash jeans are much more multi-purpose than light wash. They can be dressed up for “casual friday” at work or a date with a nice blouse, or dressed down with a tee for everything else. SAVE // SPEND

Spring Shoes to Spring For

I am by no means as much of a shoe-aloholic as my mom is (she literally has boxes of unopened shoes in her closet) but that does not mean that I’m not as enamored by them as she is. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that my own shoe collection is a bit lacking and that I would like to put a lot more effort and a little more of my paycheck into purchasing more shoes that I believe are not only gorgeous but have become staples over the last year or so. Here are my top Spring shoe styles that I either own a pair of or will very soon.

spring shoes

1. Ankle Boots – Ankle boots look good on absolutely everyone, and this is no exception during the Spring/Summer seasons. Pair these with boyfriend jeans, denim shorts or a flowy dress and you’re good to go

2. Flats – I bought a pair similar to this from Banana Republic when I was in NYC a couple weeks ago and I have not taken them off my feet. I think they’re the perfect combo of casual and chic.

3. Structured Sandal – For those days when you don’t think you can pull off the full fledged high heel with skimpy straps or thin heels, structured heeled sandals are perfect. My feet last a whole lot longer in these guys than they do their their slightly less structured and slightly more accident-prone counterparts.

4. Strappy Heel – I’m not sure how anyone could say these aren’t hot. They’re the simplest most stripped down version of a heel there is and that’s just fine with me.

5. Open Toed Booties – I’ve mentioned this type of shoe in my NYC suitcase post but I still haven’t gotten my hands on a pair. I think of these shoes as the sexy older sister to the cute booties that I rock year round.

6. Fancy Flat Sandals – Let’s face it, sometimes your favorite pair of Havajanas or Rainbows just won’t cut it. When you need something a little more upscale yet still casual and easy to walk in, a nice pair of flat sandals are always a safe bet.

Weekly Tid Bits

Happy Monday everyone!

Here are some of the small highlights and moments from my past week (really two weeks but who’s counting) that brought a smile to my face.

Cupcarons (Cupcakes+Macaroons) and wine to celebrate my friend’s 24th birthday. And yes, they did taste as delicious as they looked.

pure barre

Spending time admiring my new pink Pure Barre socks before a long session of butt kicking.

First attempt at making dumplings. Tip: Boiling them is a LOT easier than steaming

Checking out my brand new sneaks before my first 6-miler of the season. (Definitely not usually this color coordinated during my runs)

Morning cuddles back at my parents house with Lila, the Labrador who’s convinced she’s a Laprador.

Ann Taylor Sale Kinda Day

Happy Friday everybody!

When it comes to work clothes my top 3 stores to hit up are J.Crew, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor. More recently though, Ann Taylor has surprised me with their awesome selection of clothing and accessories and moved her way to the top of my list for work pieces. So when I received an email this morning detailing a 40% off every full-priced item, I had to jump (regardless of whether or not I have any money to spend after last weekend’s NYC trip). But if I did have money to spend, here are the pieces I would be spending on:

Have a fantastic weekend!
